Hot weather finally hit Alton over the late May bank holiday weekend after weeks of cool temperatures and persistent showers.

With this came an increased demand for water, but the cost-of-living crisis plus concern for the environment has made buying it in a plastic bottle from a shop a less attractive proposition.

However Alton Town Council has come up with a solution by using the skills of Eggar’s School pupil George, who was on work experience at the council.

He designed a window sticker for businesses to display to tell people they could refill their water bottles there for free.

George said: “It was an amazing experience, turning my creativity into something useful for the environment.”

The idea for the scheme came from the climate change committee when the water fountain in the Public Gardens was repaired.

Members realised there was no suitable location for another drinking fountain in the Market Square, so they asked local businesses to help by offering to fill people’s water bottles for free.

Alton town mayor Cllr Barbara Tansey said: “By displaying these ‘Free Water Bottle Refill’ signs, our local cafés, shops and restaurants are making it easier for people to choose refill over single-use plastic.

“It’s a simple idea that can make a real difference - helping residents and visitors to stay hydrated while reducing waste and supporting our town’s commitment to tackling climate change.

“We are grateful to the businesses taking part and helping towards a cleaner, more sustainable town centre.”

The scheme has been funded by the climate change committee. Businesses that have already decided to put up the stickers are The Market Hotel, Goldfinch Books, Caffè Nero, Coffee Cherry, Millie’s, Mike Frost Carpets and the Wellbeing Pharmacy.
