A pub near Alton has been granted a new premises licence despite objections from residents who warned it could lead to late-night noise and disruption.
The application, submitted by Barry Pethers, relates to The Royal Oak in Gosport Road, Lower Farringdon, where permission was sought for live and recorded music both indoors and outdoors from midday until midnight Monday to Saturday, and until 10pm on Sundays.
Residents argued the extended hours, combined with outdoor music and alcohol sales, would harm the quiet rural setting.
One objection said the plans were “likely to cause significant nuisance”, citing concerns over loud music, litter and disturbance from customers leaving late at night.
Local resident Jane Lynch said the changes would have a “significant and detrimental effect” on her family’s quality of life.
She told East Hampshire District Council that her child already struggled to sleep when live music was played, adding that “the enjoyment of our own homes and gardens will be jeopardised by intrusive loud music”.
She also raised concerns about an increase in visitors lingering outside after closing time, as well as potential risks linked to drink-driving and crime.
At an East Hampshire District Council licensing meeting on April 17, Debbie Batley, clerk to Farringdon Parish Council, said previous outdoor events had been “very loud” and affected nearby homes.
The parish council called for stricter limits, recommending that music and alcohol sales end by 11pm.
Residents also pointed to noise issues during the summer of 2025, particularly from music played in the pub’s garden, and warned that granting the licence could lead to ongoing disturbance.
The council’s licensing team said no formal noise complaints had been recorded during that period. They added that any future issues could be addressed through the complaints process and a potential licence review. Councillors ultimately approved the application.
