Hampshire Police are appealing for information after an elderly woman was spotted walking on a dual carriageway on the A31 near Alton from Four Marks.
Callers described her as appearing unsteady on her feet and expressed concern that she could fall into the road.
According to Hampshire Police, units attended the location within minutes of each call being made and carried out area searches along several lanes leading off the A31 and into neighbouring villages.
Despite their efforts, the woman could not be found and officers had no information to indicate which direction she may have travelled.
A spokesperson for East Hampshire Police said: "This could not be further from the truth. Public safety is a priority for us as the police."
A member of the public has since commented online suggesting they may know who the woman is or where she lives. Police are urging that person and anyone else with relevant information co come forward.
Anyone with information is asked to call 101 and quote Hampshire Police reference number 44260288686 so that officers can speak with the woman and arrange any appropriate support through partner agencies.
Police are also reminding the public that if they see anyone in a situation where they believe injury could occur, they should call 999 or 101 when it is safe to do so.
