A LORRY reportedly struck the A325 railway bridge in Wrecclesham with a 'hydraulic arm' on Monday afternoon - partly blocking the road in both directions.

As of 5pm, a police officer could be seen directing traffic at the scene, with traffic taking turns to pass the stricken lorry parked on the pavement just south of the bridge.

It has been reported the lorry hit the steel boom protecting the southern side of the bridge with a hydraulic arm mounted on its trailer.

Motorists reported long tailbacks as a result of the incident, in combination with the roadworks on the A325 at the top of Wrecclesham Hill, but the road was declared clear shortly after 6pm.

It also comes just weeks after the last lorry to hit the bridge on July 11, and is at least the fourth such incident so far this year.

Following a more serious incident in February, in which an HGV collapsed on the pavement under the bridge, spilling 300 gallons of diesel and closing the A325 for a prolonged period, MP Jeremy Hunt condemned Wrecclesham’s "flawed road layout" and set out plans for "urgent improvements" on the A325.

The South West Surrey MP said in the wake of the incident: "A number of measures have already been carried out such as the cleaning of road signage and cutting back of verges. But we need to do more to safeguard residents.

"There are further agreed actions which are due to be implemented such as repairing one of the electronic low bridge warning signs and making further improvements to the pathways.

"In addition a senior team from SCC will visit Wrecclesham in the next two weeks to agree a plan of additional actions – these include possible siting of a new pedestrian crossing and an additional refuge (island) in the middle of the A325.

"Network Rail has also agreed some funding to make further enhancements to the bridge.

"The risk of someone get seriously injured is very real – the latest HGV incident this week highlights that the current road layout and infrastructure is flawed and urgent improvements must be made.”
