THE inaugural Jane Austen ‘Walk for Literacy’ was so successful that it may become an annual event, according to organisers.

Organised by the Jane Austen Literacy Foundation, walking in Jane’s footsteps was group founder, and Jane Austen’s fifth great-niece, Caroline Jane Knight, who was accompanied by several Foundation ambassadors, group members, friends and fans.

On the June 17 walk, they followed a route Jane would take from her home in Chawton to The Swan pub in Alton and back to collect the mail.

Rattling tins for Worldreader, the group - many dressed in Regency costume - collected £47.91 from the generous denizens of Alton, but online donations netted more than £2,000.

Donations can still be made at janeaustenliteracyfoundation.org.

The foundation aims to raise £10,000 for Worldreader, which will provide e-books and an e-library to Suhum MA Experimental School in Ghana.
