Haslemere may be in the Chancellor of the Exchequer’s back pocket, but there is no cash to be found.
Like most towns, Haslemere banks have shut their doors one by one, migrating online and leaving many residents without access to their cash. But Cash Access UK plans to change this.
It has confirmed a new banking hub will be coming to Haslemere.
The hub will be setting up shop in the bones of the former Lloyds Bank at 12 High Street.
When it opens, the hub will be operated by the Post Office, where customers of all major banks and building societies can carry out regular cash transactions. It will also offer a community banker service so customers can talk to their bank about more complicated issues, Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.
The community bankers will work on rotation, with a different bank or building society available on each day of the week:
- Monday: Barclays
- Tuesday: NatWest
- Wednesday: Lloyds
- Thursday: HSBC
- Friday: Santander (morning)
Haslemere resident Christian Klovekorn-Ward said: “The new hub is a very good thing. The lack of banking in the town centre is a disgrace – they’ve got to sort it.”
Another Hindhead resident said: “The hub won’t change my life dramatically but it is a good thing.”
Beryl Bishop said it was “about time”.
Jeremy Hunt said: “This is great news for Haslemere and I know the hub when it opens will be welcomed by residents. I have been pushing for a bank of some sort for Haslemere for many months and am pleased the new banking hub for the town is progressing well.”
Cllr Jerome Davidson: “The council is delighted the location of the banking hub at the former Lloyds Bank building has been confirmed.
“This is excellent news for the town and its residents who have been badly impacted by the recent lack of access to cash and banking services.”
