STUDENTS have been learning more about life on a construction site with a visit to the Barratt Homes development in Bordon (pictured).

Staff from the housebuilder hosted the visit, by Fareham College students, at the New Quarter section of the barracks.

The visit was to help the students with their bricklaying and construction and built-environment courses.

The students were split into three teams and took part in the Development In A Day workshop, which took students through the development process - finding a suitable piece of land, obtaining planning permission, subcontractor and supplier tendering, sales and marketing, construction and finance. At the end of the workshop the students met the site manager who discussed his career path and the work of a site manager.

Four of the level-three bricklaying students have been offered work experience, which follows on from the success of the last bricklaying student from Fareham College who was offered an apprenticeship two weeks into his work experience with Barratt.

Barratt community liaison manager Anthony Dimmick said: “We have a strong commitment to developing the next generation of housebuilders.”

College lecturer in construction and the built environment Steve Gilder said: “Site manager Phil Cripps was able to provide a real insight into life on site.”
