A new independent veterinary practice has opened its doors in Haslemere, offering pet owners access to specialist care without the backing of a corporate chain.

Haslemere Vets, led by veterinary surgeons Helen and Sophie, officially opened in early summer and has already received a warm welcome from the local community.

The practice is based in the former Richmond’s chainsaw building opposite St Stephen’s Church in Shottermill. The refurbished building has been renamed Harris House in memory of its previous owner.

Both vets have undertaken postgraduate training, with Sophie holding a Postgraduate Certificate in Small Animal Internal Medicine and Helen a Postgraduate Certificate in Small Animal Surgery.

The practice features three consulting rooms, separate cat and dog wards, an isolation area, surgical theatre, digital X-ray suite and dedicated dentistry room.

Its equipment includes a laparoscopic surgical system for minimally invasive procedures, while an in-house laboratory means many blood tests and health screens can be processed with results available within an hour.

The surgery also offers ultrasound, digital X-rays and dental X-rays, allowing the team to diagnose and treat many conditions on site and reduce the need for external referrals.

Independence is at the heart of the practice, with Helen and Sophie having personally invested their savings in establishing the surgery. They say this gives them the freedom to prioritise animal welfare, continuity of care and clear communication with owners.

The pair will also remain the practice’s permanent veterinary surgeons, allowing clients to see the same vet consistently and helping build long-term relationships with pets and their owners.

Alongside the vets is a team of veterinary nurses and reception staff chosen for their technical expertise and focus on compassionate, community-based care.
