EAST Hampshire District Council chairman David Ashcroft hoisted the Commonwealth flag high over Penns Place on Monday as part of a scene replicated around the world.
In describing the raising of the flag as “a chance to strengthen ties with our global partners”, Mr Ashcroft said: “Raising the Commonwealth flag is a celebration of our relationships with our traditional friends around the world. We are fortunate that we have historic ties with so many nations with whom we share social, cultural and economic values.
“We are proud to be part of the Commonwealth and happy to celebrate this global partnership in East Hampshire.”
Every year, more than 700 Commonwealth flags are raised in locations around the UK, in the UK’s overseas territories, and in Commonwealth countries.
Commonwealth Day aims to reaffirm the commitment of all member states to democracy, development, and respect for diversity.
