Staff at Eggar's School in Alton were "delighted" that its Year 11 pupils performed brilliantly in their GCSE examinations this summer.

Some 37 per cent of Eggar's pupils earned grade 7, 8 or 9 in one or more of their subjects.

A spokesperson said: "It was wonderful to see our class of 2023 looking so happy when they came to school to collect their GCSE results.

"Year 11 students demonstrated extraordinary resilience and determination through three years of focused GCSE study. This cohort has resolutely overcome the educational barriers caused by the pandemic in March 2020.

"They were committed to the revision schedule here at school and it is very satisfying to see that their hard work has paid off with well-deserved grades."

Grade 4 or higher was earnt by 79.7 per cent of pupils in English, 85.4 per cent in maths, 98 per cent in separate sciences and 75.8 per cent in science combined. Grade 7 or higher was earned by 21.9 per cent in English language and maths. There were 52 grade 9s, 125 grade 8s and 179 grade 7s in various subjects.

Headteacher Patrick Sullivan, congratulating his last GCSE class before retirement, said: "As always, we could not be prouder of their achievements. We congratulate them on the individual successes and thank their teachers for the way they helped our students. The mood was joyous here today; they have achieved really good results.

"I would like to thank every member of staff who has contributed to these results. Their relentless professionalism and kindness have enabled the year group to do so well."
