I’m going to blow the trumpet for The Folly Wine Bar.

Not content with dishing up great food and drink, this legendary Petersfield hotspot also serves an excellent programme of events.

Take last Tuesday (May 20), for instance, as an audience of 30 people were treated to a sublime evening of jazz.

A five-piece band of expert musicians, led by the engaging and talented Jody Smith on keys, played a two set adventure into the lands of well-known tunes, with new routes and happy detours.

The saxophonist Steve Grainger and his co-pilot trumpeter, Stewart Prosser took you in and out, up and down and back around the track so many times, that you got lost in the joy of the song – detouring around the coast, up the mountains and down to the sea in a final, joyous run with arms out and spirits high.

Key to this magnificent evening was a flawlessly fluid piano, reminiscent of the great Nina Simone. Drummer, John Clarke and Matt Tween on Bass guitar fused into one beat, giving an imperceptibly smooth rhythm.

Special guest, Freddie Saxo joined the band on Tenor sax in the second half. Nice.

If an evening isn’t enough for fans of the genre, then the forthcoming Petersfield Jazz Festival should really get toes and fingers tapping.

The festival returns to the grounds of Churcher’s College on Saturday, June 14, with a dozen acts performing across two stages.

Rainey’s Revue, Betty Accorsi, Jazz Samba and the Full Circle Quarter will be among the later acts on The Lounge Stage while Freddie Saxo, Sarah Jane Eveleigh and The Remedy will grace the Strange Fruit Jazz Stage.

Revellers can also expect plenty of food and drink opens and open mic sessions, for more details and tickets visit https://www.petersfieldjazzfest.com/
