A FORMER soldier who battered his ex-girlfriend's car with a baseball bat escaped prison on Monday, despite breaching court orders that stopped him from going near her.

Paul Stephens, 37, from Bordon, flew into a rage outside his former lover's flat last year after she told him their relationship was over.
