A Haslemere family’s charity football tournament in memory of Zak Combe has raised more than £2,000.

Jason, Juliet and Harry Combe organised the 2022 Zak Combe Cup at Haslemere Recreation Ground on Sunday, August 28. The annual event had to be postponed in 2020 and 2021 because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The tournament was held in memory of Zak, who died in a crash on the A3 in June 2017. All proceeds from the event will go towards Brake, the road safety charity – a cause close to the family’s heart.

More than 100 football players took part in the cup. The cricket pavilion was open with a full bar, DJ, food and raffle prizes.

Jason Combe, Zak’s father, said: “It was an amazing day. Because of Covid people didn’t know if we would do it again.

“It was unreal. The love and support from all those youngsters was brilliant.

“It’s a celebration of Zak’s life – a coming together.

“We raised more than £2,000 for Brake which is absolutely amazing.

“I would like to thank some of the businesses in Haslemere which have been so generous, including JK Coaching.

“Oli the DJ did all the music and didn’t charge us a penny, and Hungry Boys provided food.

“Some of the donations we received from businesses such as Old Thorns, Lythe Hill Hotel, Banyan Restaurant, Coppa Club, Bell’s Butchers, the Sports Locker and Hemingways were fantastic. The Swan and the White Horse also gave us meal donations.

“There were more than 100 footballers and 150 people on the day. There were people there who had no connection to Zak.

“There were friends of Zak and our other son Harry, and their friends.

“They get older and people now live in Bristol, Brighton and London, but they make the effort to come because they don’t want to miss it for the world.

“It was a beautiful day. At the end of the day we had a balloon release.

“It was the first one since 2019 and I felt it more this year than previous years.

“Next year’s cup is happening at Haslemere Rec on Sunday, August 27.”
