Petersfield market has lost a first-class duo as a pair have packed up a school uniform stall after 38 years of trading.

Julie Crane and Jackie Sykes have kitted out thousands of children since the late 1980s through their Petersfield School Uniform Supplies stall in the Square and former Alsorts shop on Lavant Street.

Their market stall is thought to be the only one of its kind in the country, while they were also responsible for the Petersfield Infant School logo.

But with four decades of trade behind them and uniform laws changing, school’s out for the legendary duo.

“There has never been a stall like ours across any market across the country – we’re very niche,” said the pair.

“When we first came onto the market we were doing fashion and jewellery. Then a bit of baby clothes and it progressed into uniform.

“We sold a quality product that can be handed down and parents knew what they were getting.

“I think I can probably say for both of us that it’s coming at the right time,” added Julie.

“At some stage it had to happen and we both felt it was probably the right time. We’ve had plenty of good wishes.”

The pair looked at renting a unit in the Folly Market before settling for a stall where they’ve sold countless TPS, Herne Junior and Petersfield Infant School uniforms over the years. They have literally seen their customer base grow, as some of the pupils they kitted out in the 80s now even have grandchildren.

Julie added: “It’s not only grandchildren, but great grandchildren, too, as kids start school so early these days.

“It’s nice to see the full cycle go round.”

The pair will still be regulars at the market, as they’re going part-time, but will not be selling uniforms any longer.
