Two mums of disabled children in Farnham have taken on the challenge of walking the 100km Thames Path in just two days.

The duo are raising funds for local charity Challengers, to show their appreciation for everything the charity has done for their families.

The route, affectionately known as ‘the foot shredder,’ will be tough to tackle in just 48 hours, but Rachel Johnson and Sarah Franklin have been training solidly since January to help prepare.

Rachel said: “We bought all the kit – poles, new boots, strange toe socks, lots of Lycra, blister kit and painkillers.

“And there was only one charity we wanted to do it for, and that’s Challengers, as we both have sons with special needs.”

Their sons Harley, aged 11, who was born with a rare chromosomal disorder, and Seb, 17, who has an undiagnosed syndrome, have both been going to Challengers for years.

Sarah said: “We love our boys dearly, but they are exhausting and full on. It’s all day every day.

“Their learning difficulties, communication problems, personal care needs, sensory issues, and autism (amongst other things) means they need constant adult supervision, and Challengers offers families like ours a much needed break.

“Walking the whole Thames Path in two days is going to be really difficult, but we felt it was important to do something that challenges us, and reflects the challenges our boys experience every day.”
