As Petersfield prepares for the big switch on the team behind a series of popular festivals are counting on revellers to fulfil a Christmas wish of their own.

For much of the last decade two events have become fixtures on Petersfield’s festive calendar: the lights switch-on and the Christmas Festival.

The former will take place this Friday (November 28) with carols, stalls and entertainment in The Square.

Performances by local school groups, theatre choirs and carol singing with music from the Petersfield Salvation Army Band will be among the highlights with the big switch-on at 7pm.

Most residents know there won’t be a Christmas Festival as Ben Errey and Steve Jacob of organisers Petersfield Community Events decided to take a break following the cancellation of last year’s event and the controversy over refunds which followed.

Before the hiatus it’s fair to say their frequent Bank Holiday festivals in Petersfield were among the most popular annual events in both the town and district.

And with the pair believing they and their events have been “missed” by the public and participants, they are keen to hold a Spring Festival in 2026.

They’ve asked for a hand with the duo launching a crowdfunding campaign to cover half the £20,000 setting up and operational costs of the May event.

The pair said: “We are building the event from the ground up and are looking for the community to buy into it and help make the event happen.

“We have been running events in Petersfield for more than 13 years and we’re willing to give our time and skills to make this free, community event happen.

“We want to bring back one big festival a year and the Petersfield Spring Festival over the Spring Bank Holiday weekend at the end of May is the most popular.

“But to put the event on, it costs a minimum of £20,000 – so we need the public’s help.

“Every penny donated will go directly towards making the Petersfield Spring Festival possible for everyone to enjoy.”

Nearly £1,800 has been pledged since the appeal was launched in early November with plenty of well-known town names and firms giving financial support.

The festival takes over much of the town centre and usually features classic cars and motorcycles, dozens of stalls, children’s rides, family entertainment and a programme of live music in The Square.

Interested businesses can become a Friend of the Festival through sponsorship while organisers are keen to hear from bands, performers, community groups, litter pickers, event marshals and anyone who would like to help.

* There’s a further festive treat as a late-night Christmas shopping evening will take place in Petersfield next Thursday, December 4, with many independent shops in the town opening until 8pm.

“It’s the perfect chance to enjoy a relaxed midweek wander, pick up thoughtful gifts, and support our local businesses without the weekend rush,” said a spokesperson.
