A FILM promoting Jane Austen’s connections to Chawton and Alton is to be shown for the first time.

The 20-minute film describes the world-famous author’s life in the area and includes stunning footage of the house, museum and library as well as Regency architecture on Alton High Street.

Commissioned by East Hampshire District Council, the film aims to attract Austen’s global fans to the town, boosting the local economy.

Glynis Watts, EHDC’s portfolio holder for economy and placemaking, said: “Jane Austen has one of the most dedicated followings of any author in history and she published all her famous novels while living right on our doorstep.

“We want the world to know the crucial role Chawton and Alton played in her life and place this part of the world at the centre of Jane Austen’s life story.

“This beautiful film reveals what her life was like both at home in Chawton and on visits to Alton, her main point of contact for transport, commerce and society.”

The film, created by Alt House Media, a media company based in Alton, includes expert commentary on Jane’s life in East Hampshire and a celebration of the town’s annual Regency Week.

The public will be able to see the film for the first time from 5pm-6pm on Tuesday, October 2, at Alton Assembly Rooms.

Short excerpts from the film will be posted to EHDC’s social media accounts in the days leading uo to the showing.
