HEADLEY Horticultural Society’s summer show displayed flowers, fruit and vegetables at Headley Village Hall.

But the preceding heatwave meant that roses, delphiniums and sweet peas had “suffered quite badly”, said organisers, and were in short supply on the benches at the July 1 show. Also the soft fruit had suffered from the unexpected frost in May.

Judges Chris and Bill Knight congratulated the members on their skill in dealing with the vagaries of the British weather.

The floral arrangements were said to be “beautiful” with some “inventive interpretations of the titles”. This year, Tilford’s entry was judged the best interpretation of Along The Seashore.

The winner of the Worshipful Company of Gardeners’ diploma was Lynne Moss. Her entry, in the novice’s class, was judged the best overall.

The cooks had been hard at work and “delicious entries” were on show, organisers said. Winner Edna Howard, had made a jar of rhubarb and ginger jam.

The stewards and judges were treated to lunch, prepared by Jennifer Mitchell and Sylvia Stoner who then served tea and coffee with homemade cake for the afternoon visitors.

The cups, medals and certificates were presented at 4pm, followed by a raffle with a selection of gifts.

The autumn show will be on Saturday, September 9.
