SELBORNE celebrated another successful FOSStival last Saturday as the sun shone on the seventh edition of the family-friendly music festival.

More than 500 visitors flocked to Selborne Primary School to see musicians from all over Hampshire, including indie-rockers The Bayonettes, Guildford’s Me And The Moon, and Selborne veterans The Zig-Zag Band.

FOSStival aims to offer young performers and visitors an inspiring entry into the world of festivals, with live music and entertainment within a safe, family-orientated environment.

The event raises money for instruments and musical education at the village school, offering every student the chance to get involved in music, regardless of means or background.

Takings on the day amounted to more than £6,000 from ticket sales, stall fees and entertainment, including the wheel of the fortune and a raffle for a wheelbarrow of wine.

The event was also well supported by numerous local businesses who donated prizes, sponsored beer pumps, or paid for branding on the day.

The music began with performances from the choir and the band from Selborne Primary School, before some excellent sets from a selection of young musicians.

Highlights included Ad Astra, a new band formed of former Selborne students; community project Ultrasonic, which gives 12 to 16 year olds the chance to experience being in a rock band with tutoring from professional musicians; and Alton College alumni the Smallwood Booley Band.

Later in the day came Borders Acoustic Duo, comprising graduates of Guildford’s ACM, and Dorset singer-songwriter Bethany Pearl.

The night reached a raucous climax as first The Bayonettes then The Zig Zag Band closed this year’s festivities in glorious evening sunshine.
