Alton Community Cupboard has received £3,000 from Newbury Building Society’s Cost of Living Support initiative.

Sandra Marks, who runs the cupboard, said: “About 30 volunteers collect surplus edible food from all the major grocery stores. We bring it back, check and sort it and then give it away.

“We do not ask for proof of need, or limit what people can take or how often they can visit. On an average week we can get up to 200 families enjoying free food.”

The society, which has a branch in Alton, also gave Havant and East Hants Mind £3,406 and Citizens Advice East Hampshire £4,500.
