THE tenacity of the British gardner will survive all weathers if the members of Headley Horticultural Society are anything to go by.

With storms breaking down the sweet peas and delphiniums, and constant heavy rain battering flowers and encouraging an army of slugs, it is surprising they had the spirit left to go ahead with their annual summer show on June 27.

But they filled Headley village hall with a beautiful selection of flowers, fruit and vegetables.

Show secretary Jeanette Bell said: “After the terrible storms during the previous week it was a wonder that anything was still standing but, as usual, our members came through with a wide selection of flowers and produce.

“The roses were probably the best that we had seen for several years, but the sweet peas and delphiniums were casualties of the storms.”

The soft fruit was decimated by the wet and slugs, with only gooseberries and raspberries surviving.

Judges Chris and Bill Knight congratulated the members on their skill in dealing with “the vagaries of the British weather”.

The winner of the floral arrangements was Jennifer Mitchell with her arrangement of The Mad Hatter’s Tea Party. She was also the winner of the cakes, biscuits and preserves section.

There were a varied selection of photographs and the category of Through the Garden Gate brought in some imaginative pictures.

The stewards and judges were treated to lunch prepared by Jill Howard-Duff and Sylvia Stoner.

The cups, medals and certificates were presented in the late afternoon.

The autumn show will be on September 3, again in Headley Village Hall.
