A RAFT of parking restrictions are proposed in Grayshott, as a result village trader’ concerns that long stays are driving customers away.
East Hampshire District Council (EHDC) is recommending a traffic regulation order (TRO) is imposed in Headley Road and Crossways Road.
In Headley Road, waiting will be limited to two hours, from Monday-Saturday, 8am-6pm within the currently unlimited time spaces.
There will be no waiting at any time from Rockdale Drive to junction of Hurstmere Close, and no waiting at any time between the limited waiting bays east of the junction with the Avenue to a point opposite the junction with Hurstmere Close.
In Crossways Road, waiting will also be limited to two hours, Monday- Saturday (8am-6pm) within the currently unlimited time spaces.
There will be no waiting at any time for a distance from south of the junction with Headley Road; no waiting at any time from the boundary of The Kings Peace and Comus for some distance; and no waiting at any time from a point south of the junction of Crossways Road for some distance.
EHDC also considered introducing restrictions in Hill Road, The Avenue and Glen Road, to deter drivers from parking there instead for unlimited stays, but did not receive enough support and so will monitor the situation to see what effect the TROs have.
Changes suggested to off-street parking restrictions will also not be pursued and the impact on village car parks will be monitored, following the introduction of on-street limited waiting times.
The proposed TROs are the result of an extensive public consultation exercise and exhibition, with Grayshott Parish Council supporting the measures.
EHDC’s head of neighbourhood support Natalie Meagher revealed the results of the parking review to the parish council in April.
They showed parking was at a premium in the centre of Grayshott, and surveys undertaken during the last few years showed parking, both on-street and off-street, was at or nearing capacity on a regular basis.
EHDC held an exhibition in April 2017 that set out proposals for both on-street and off-street parking solutions.
More than 220 residents attended and over 100 questionnaires were completed.
Feedback received was used to firm up the parking proposals.
There was overwhelming support for introducing a limited waiting scheme in Headley Road and Crossways Road, but proposals to make it up to one hour were extended to two hours due to majority support.
Proposals to introduce on street restrictions to Glen Road and Avenue Road were received less favourably.
Those responding acknowledged the three council-owned car parks were getting clogged but proposals to introduce a parking permit system received mixed reviews.
The on-street works in Headley Road and Crossways Road form part of EHDC’s traffic management team’s programme for this year.
Officers can proceed with the process of implementing a TRO in both roads, unless a ward councillor requests the recommendations be dealt with by Cabinet – or 10 or more objections are received.
