FINAL preparations are well under way for a fiesta of fireworks and bonfire bonanzas in and around Farnham.

Although officially Guy Fawkes Night – marking the anniversary of the Gunpowder Plot of 1605, when Guy Fawkes tried to blow up the Houses of Parliament – is on Monday, November 5, the main firework action takes places on Saturday, November 3.

Here we pick out five of the best events taking place in Farnham, or slightly further afield:

* Farnham fireworks and torchlit procession – Saturday, November 3, from 5.45pm-9pm at Central car park and Farnham Park.

Farnham Round Table’s annual fireworks extravaganza, starting with a flaming torchlit procession from Central car park (6.15pm) marching up Castle Street into Farnham Park, led by Scottish pipers in full regalia.

There will be food, mulled wine, Hogs Back beer, children’s rides and a ‘Best Guy’ competition, as well as the bonfire, which will be lit at 7.15pm. And it will all be followed by the Round Table’s fireworks display set to music at 7.45pm.

The band Late to the Party will be providing live music, starting around 7pm and again after the fireworks, plus more entertainment from Eagle Radio.

Advance tickets (£6 adults, £4 children, £16 families) can be bought online at farnhamroundtable.org.uk or around Farnham on Saturday, October 27, and Saturday, November 3.

* Farnham Rugby Club’s Fireworks to Music – Saturday, November 3, from 5.30pm-9.30pm at Monkton Lane.

With bars, barbecues and children’s sweet shops, “this is THE fireworks party”, according to a sokesman for Farnham Rugby Club.

Open to everyone, advance tickets (£5 adults, £4 children, £15 families) are available from the Farnham Rugby Club clubhouse, Wrights Off Licence, and Charters Estate Agents, Farnham. No sparklers allowed.

* Whitehill & Bordon firework display – Wednesday, November 7, from 5pm-10pm at Country Market, Main Road, Kingsley.

The Whitehill Bordon Town Partnership is holding its popular family-friendly fireworks display and funfair at Country Market again this year, including a lantern parade at 6pm followed by an early display for the younger children at 6.15pm, and the main firework display at 8pm.

Tickets are priced £4 for adults, £3 for children and free for under-fives, while on-site parking and a free bus service from Bordon are available. Refreshments and facilities on site.

* Chiddingfold bonfire – Saturday, November 3, stalls open 5pm at Chiddingfold Green and shuttle buses start from Witley Station.

A slice of history 170 years in the making, torches go on sale 6.30pm at St Mary's School followed by the torchlight procession to the green starting 7pm for the lighting of the famous bonfire at 7.30pm and a fireworks display at 8pm.

Hot food and drink will be on sale on the green, adding to plenty of fun and games for the children. All proceeds go to charity.

* Bonfire night at Chawton House – Saturday, November 3, from 11am-7pm at Chawton House, Chawton, near Alton.

For something a bit different, Chawton House, an Elizabethan manor house that once belonged to Jane Austen’s brother Edward, will be extending its opening hours until 7pm, serving mulled cider and toffee apples prior to Chawton village’s firework display. Normal admission (£8 adults, £4 under-16s, under-sixes free) for the house applies, plus an additional cost (£5 adults, under-16s free) for the village display. To book, visit chawtonhouse.org.
