LADIES hairdressing has changed a lot since Paul Barrett opened his first shop, Leon Paul, in Whitehill 50 years ago, on the corner of New Road and the High Street.
As business grew, he was able to move to larger premises across the road.
“I had specialised in colouring but most of my customers, when I first started, were older and just wanted a blue rinse, which made white hair more stylish.
“In those days pensioners could get a concession of having their hair washed and set for just 3/6d (15p).”
Newly retired, having closed his salon for the last time in September, Mr Barrett said he decided to become a ladies’ hairdresser “because I thought it would be romantic”, but it was a far cry from the career he planned when he left school.
