Think18, founded by Tessa Denison, has teamed up with Stagecoach Godalming to run a series of free dance and drama sessions via Zoom.
These short workshops provide a vital opportunity for young people with disabilities to express themselves, see their friends, and build their self-confidence, which ultimately improves their general wellbeing.
Tessa said: “It is vital to have continuous contact with young adults and their parents/carers during these difficult times.
“Lockdown has the potential to be a lonely and challenging time for our vulnerable adults so we wanted to ensure we could still be there for them ‘virtually’ and bring to life our strapline ‘make friends, have fun’.
“This new online resource is also unique in allowing us to extend our services reaching those outside of West Sussex. Even when lockdown is lifted, if sufficient funding is in place we hope to continue our ‘At Home’ virtual activities.
“We are thrilled for Think18 to partner the passionate teachers at Stagecoach Godalming. By forging strong partnerships, we are giving our students the best possible opportunities.”
Principal of Stagecoach Godalming Holly King said: “I am so excited that we have teamed up with Think18.
“Myself and my team of teachers have such a huge passion for the performing arts and to share this with everyone at Think18 is quite magical.
“What is wonderful is seeing the great big smile on these young people’s faces which just lights up my computer screen and makes me smile from ear to ear.”
Think18 is also offering activity packs through the post for young adults with learning disabilities. So far these have ranged from a ceramic rainbow money box for each young adult to paint, and a ‘paint a jigsaw’ activity.
Further free ‘virtual’ workshops are planned, too, around gardening, nature and exercise – and there is a further chance for the adults to be sociable with informal ‘virtual’ drinks evenings.
These resources are designed to give parents and carers a well-deserved short break in these intense times – with dedicated ‘parents listening’ Zoom chats also taking place to share stories and advice.
