Following on from Haslemere Hogs in 2017, Hares in 2018 and Hounds in 2019, this year’s Haslemere community arts project featured Haslemere Hens.

The gala finale saw a dozen hens being auctioned off at Haslewey Community Centre, where combined sales raised just under £6,000.

When added to sponsorship and other private sales of hens, the total raised this year will exceed £35,000 – much of which is going to good causes.

Organiser and past mayor Brian Howard, and his daughter Melissa King, delivered 80 Haslemere Hens this year. They believe the imagination of artists and schools has made this the best year yet. This year is set to be the last time the community arts project is held in the town.

Brian and Melissa are happy to mentor any volunteer successors, but don’t feel able to sustain their commitment.

Brian said: “The greatest joy for us has been watching grandparents and grandchildren hugging the creatures and having their photographs taken. It is wonderful that some 30 schools and youth groups have participated. The fact that more than £180,000 has been raised for good causes over the four years is a fantastic bonus.”

Brian noted the support of all sponsors and paid specific tributes to Haslemere Town Council, Haslemere Festival and Undershaw School.

Haslemere mayor Jacquie Keen said: “I’d like to thank Brian and Melissa on behalf of the town for their outstanding and imaginative contribution to Haslemere’s community spirit.”

One of this year’s hens – the UkrainiHen – was based at the Fernhurst Hub’s window this summer, and was bought by hub supporters at the auction.

Fernhurst Hub chairman of trustees Antonia Plant said: “This beautiful blue and yellow hen has become a part of the decor at the hub.

“We are delighted she is here to stay in recognition of how the people of Fernhurst have opened their hearts and homes and welcomed Ukrainians into their lives.”

There are a small number of hens still available to buy online at www.haslemerehens.co.uk
