There are concerns in the community about the potential closure of Rowan Ward at Petersfield Hospital.

Currently, ten beds are closed on the ward due to planned maintenance, but no final decisions have been made about its future.

Petersfield Hospital provides a wide range of services, including rehabilitation, an urgent treatment centre, an assessment unit, and a number of community clinics and services such as physiotherapy and mental health support.

A spokesperson for Hampshire and Isle of Wight NHS Foundation Trust confirmed the future of the Rowan Ward was under review.

“As part of the national drive to support people in their own homes, reduce waiting times and make the best use of our resources, we are considering whether shifting some services provided at Petersfield Hospital into the community could bring better health outcomes and enable us to support more people,” the spokesperson said.

“It is envisaged that this shift from hospital to the community would not see any changes to staff numbers, more so a focus on ensuring that colleagues, with their varied and extensive skillsets, could be placed across the local area to ensure that patients’ healthcare needs are best met. “

The spokesperson added that “no firm plans have been made now, and we would seek the views of patients, families and our staff around any future proposals”.

“The Trust is committed to keeping yourself as well as other local community members updated so that you remain informed of, and engaged with, any intentions. “

Damian Hinds, MP for East Hampshire, said he was concerned about the potential loss of the ward.

“I’m aware of reports regarding the potential closure of the Rowan Ward at Petersfield Hospital,” he said.

“I have been in touch with the Integrated Care Board and Hampshire and Isle of Wight Healthcare NHS Trust, who have told me that no final decisions have been made. The Trust has also assured me that staff and patients will be consulted before any changes are implemented.

“I’ve already heard from concerned members of the public and have been in direct contact with several staff members. I stand ready to support them in whatever way I can. The Rowan Ward is a valued part of our community, providing essential rehabilitative and palliative care to some of our most vulnerable residents.”
