Information about this photograph is being sought by Alton historian Jane Hurst.

She wrote to Peeps: “It was in a collection that belonged to Alton’s ‘Donkey Ladies’ and seems to show Commonwealth soldiers outside Piper’s Corner – now Clark’s shoes – in Alton High Street.

“Some of the other photographs that were with this one will appear in Alton Papers No26 – which should be available soon from the Curtis Museum or myself.

“If you are interested in the history of Alton, the museum has a display upstairs about Alton’s Paper Mill, which was at the eastern end of Kings Pond.

“It shows the story of the paper-making ancestors of a descendant who now lives in Israel.

“Thank you – any ideas welcomed.”
