People of a certain age will remember an advert with the tagline “it’s good to talk”.
And Harry Driver swears by it, as a self-supporting group he recently launched in a Bordon church has become an outlet for all men with mental health problems.
Men suffering with depression, anxiety or mental health issues have been invited to share their problems at The Man Cave at St Mark’s Church.
The support group operates in a “friendly, safe and understanding group chatroom format” where no-one is judged and problems are shared.
Mr Driver launched the Man Cave as “a safe space for men struggling with mental health” as he benefited from a similar group in London before moving to Whitehill & Bordon.
The group, which meets from 7.30pm to 9pm at the Pinehill Road church every Wednesday, has been running for around a month and is open to all ages, although he’s really keen for more 20 and 30-somethings to engage.
Mr Driver said: “Most of the men who have come along so far have been in their 40s, 50s and 60s and it feels like they’re more willing to open up.
“The hardest ones are in their 20s and 30s – maybe it’s down to status and testosterone. When you get older who realise you don’t have to bottle everything up.”
A whole range of issues can be discussed from anxiety, loneliness, relationship breakdowns and grief to addiction and abuse – it’s a brotherhood to help people, according to Harry.
He said: “We just want men to know it’s Ok for men to talk about their problems and what’s going in their head, as a problem shared is often a problem halved.
“Whatever is said in the room stays in the room and is confidential. It’s just about talking.”
