A legendary showman made history last weekend when one of Petersfield’s oldest events held the first opening ceremony in its 206 years.
David “Mr Petersfield” Weeks urged the crowds to “have a go” on the Taro Fair rides when the three-day event on the Heath was opened last Friday.
The 85-year-old – whose amazing suit was as dazzling as the rides – was encouraged to say a few words after town crier, Faye Thompson, gave a shout-out at the fair’s inaugural opening ceremony.
“It’s magical and I love it,” said Mr Weeks, who made a special effort to attend the historic event.
The showman has come to the fair all his life having previously worked on the rides and sideshows as a spieler in his past.
Marisa Wall of John Searle Funfairs, who now run the fair, said although the event was originally based on horses and livestock trading, entertainment and fun was always the attraction. Marisa also has many family connections with the town.
The fair has been traditionally held on The Heath since 1820 with the last horse fair taking place in 1953.
