THE WOOLMER Forest Heritage Society held a workshop on money - especially medieval coins - on March 2.
It was led by Dr David Rudling, from the School of Archaeology at the University of Brighton, and was funded by the society’s patron, East Hampshire district councillor Adam Carew, through the Councillor Community Grants Scheme.
Several members of the society gathered in The Phoenix Theatre and Arts Centre in Bordon to appreciate the origins and meaning of coins.
Dr Chris Wain, who chairs the Woolmer Forest Heritage Society, said: "It was especially enlightening to hear about the history and construct of coins through the period as Britain developed after the decline of the Romans."
The next evening meeting of the society will be at the Forest Community Centre in Bordon on April 1 at 7.30pm, when Bill Weeks will give an illustrated talk about Winchester Cathedral.
During the school Easter holiday, the society will be holding a pre-history event in Hogmoor Inclosure on April 15 from 11am-3pm, and a storytelling session in Bordon Library on April 16 at 10.30am.
The society was formed in 1982, under the name Woolmer Forest Archaeological and Historical Society, by a group of local enthusiasts who shared interests in history and archaeology.
It meets in the Forest Community Centre at 7.30pm on the first Wednesday of each month, except June, July and August, and there is usually an illustrated talk by a guest speaker. In May, June and July visits are made to places of special interest.
