The aroma of freshly-baked sausage rolls will soon be moving a bit further down Alton High Street.
Greggs - whose menu also includes hot breakfast food, pizza, hot and cold sandwiches, salads, sweet treats and drinks - is moving from its current home at number 56 to the former NatWest bank at number 38.
The Newcastle-based bakery chain will hope to see more footfall than the building’s last occupant - NatWest closed its Alton branch on October 19, 2023, after claiming only one personal banking customer used it regularly during the previous year.
A Greggs spokesperson told its customers: “Greggs is due to open a new and improved shop in Alton, relocating to a larger unit at 38 High Street next month. We will be able to share further details with you closer to the opening.”
Greggs applied to East Hampshire District Council for a pavement licence under the Business and Planning Act 2020 on November 24 last year.
It wants to create an outdoor seating area in front of the shop for the consumption of food and drink, and plans to open from 6am to 7pm every day.
Elsewhere in Alton High Street, the Scope charity shop has shut. A poster in the window said: “We are now sadly closed. We would like to say a huge thank you to all our loyal customers and local community for your support.
“We would especially like to thank our shop colleagues and volunteers for all they have done to help Scope campaign for disability equality.”

Also closed in the High Street is traditional Turkish barber Golden Scissors. Another Turkish barber remains open directly opposite.
