RAF Lyneham in Wiltshire has closed to pave the way for a new college which will train Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers soldiers currently based in Bordon and set to move out in 2015.

The announcement that, after operating in Bordon for more than 100 years, the garrison will be closing came after years of speculation about the Army's departure.

The military land in the town, which will be made available when the Army leaves, will make space for much of the eco-town development.

The outline planning application for the first big phase, which will see around a 100 new homes at Quebec Barracks, is set to be submitted later this year.
