IT had been predicted that it would be at least five years after the Army moved out of Whitehill and Bordon in 2015 before East Hampshire District Council could start work on its eco project. The 'Green Town' scheme which is expected to use up acres of Ministry of Defence land to create a new centre for the community with, at its heart, a bright and spacious central square lined with shops and filled with cafes and colourful market stalls would take time. But even before the Army leaves things appear to be happening quicker than anyone expected. Only a week after plans to build the first 100 new homes and employment space on the former Quebec Barracks, the first of the Army sites to be developed, the Homes and Communities Agency this week lodged an outline planning application for 500 houses, including affordable ones, plus around three hectares of employment space at the Louisburg Barracks with the promise of 500 new jobs.
