TO commemorate the centenary of Battle of the Somme that started on July 1, 1916, and lasted for four months, the Whitehill and Bordon War Memorial Association is organising a Service of Remembrance.

This year’s service will take place at the town’s war memorial on Sunday, July 3.

The association’s Steven Johnson said that during the battle, the British suffered around 420,000 casualties, the French around 200,000 and the Germans around 500,000.

So far the association has sent out invitations to the Bordon Army Cadets, the 2412 (Bordon & District) Air Cadets, the Scout Association and the Royal British Legion.

Mr Johnson added: “We would love to hear from any other uniformed group or groups who would be welcome to join us.”
