Concerns are mounting over policing in the Bordon & Whitehill area after a spate of incidents at the Forest Centre.

Debate over policing in the town has increased since Petersfield opened its new station in June, while Hampshire Police recently announced a staffed front desk for Alton would open soon.

Local businesses and civic leaders say shoplifting and antisocial behaviour are an ongoing issue in the Forest Centre, which has undermined trade and placed additional strain on staff.

Barnardo’s charity shop has been targeted several times, most recently when it was ransacked by vandals last week.

Ayrton Barrow, the store manager, said: “We have had several incidents in the last year from shoplifting, antisocial behaviour and fights.

“Earlier this year we made a call to the police about a fight in the centre and police officers from Alton arrived. They were fuming that no PCSOs from Bordon’s office were at the scene.

“Now they are coming down more often because of the complaints I have made and also from conversations with Andy Tree, who has been really supportive.

“£80 per month of my council tax goes toward the Police and Crime Commissioner but Bordon does not get the benefits places like Alton do and crime is a real problem in this area.”

Mr Barrow added that there had been a silver lining as the shop had seen greater community support since the incidents, with more people visiting to show solidarity.

Cllr Andy Tree, deputy leader of East Hampshire District Council, said: “I went down to the Forest Centre on Saturday and Ayrton seemed pleased to see the police presence there and whilst the council is not responsible for policing, everybody in our community deserves to feel safe.

“The Forest Centre is a vital asset for the community and it is important all crimes are reported to the police. This is so when we as the council request more resources in a problem area we can cite the police data to show it should be prioritised.”

Hampshire Police have been approached for comment.
