STUDENTS from Mill Chase Academy in Bordon visited Barratt Homes’ new development to learn more about the construction industry.

The year 11 students enjoyed workshops with the Leicestershire-based developer, which focused on the maths and design skills used to build homes.

Each task used real examples seen at New Quarter - the name given to the new houses at Louisburg Barracks.

The visit was part of Barratt Homes’ educational program and commitment to supporting the communities in which it works, and students had the chance to meet key people working on the development, including young apprentices. “We are proud to support students looking to get into construction with visits, workshops and apprenticeships,” said Barratt Homes’ community liaison manager Anthony Dimmick.

“The visit provided the perfect opportunity for real-world learning as well as showcasing the new development before it’s open.”

Noel Thompson, from Mill Chase Academy, added: “The visit was a huge boost, not only for the students’ knowledge of career routes and roles, but for their understanding and belief that success in construction is within their reach.

“Additionally, seeing the different stages of low-rise house construction, is precisely what the students’ upcoming exam is based around. Seeing first hand what we have learnt about in the classroom was an excellent experience for the students. It was a great visit.”

Brooke Wickham, 15, a Mill Chase Academy student, said: “Visits like this are really helpful to find out about different construction career paths and to get some practical experience.

“It’s great to find out about different options in the industry.

“The women apprentices here are so inspiring, it’s not just for men.”
