A LINDFORD man has been given a suspended prison sentence after refusing to pay his council tax bill.
Sean Commander, 43, of Chase Road, was sentenced to 45 days imprisonment by Aldershot magistrates last Tuesday.
But the sentence was suspended to enable the debt of £2,162.21 to be settled by weekly instalments.
Magistrates reached the decision after hearing that East Hampshire District Council had made every effort to assist him with his bill.
Brian Wood, East Hampshire District Council's revenues manager, said: "It is regrettable when the council takes court action to recover council tax arrears.
Most council tax is paid monthly by direct debit and court action is taken against relatively few people. There are strict rules governing council tax, ultimately these include commitment to prison and bankruptcy.
"But we understand that sometimes people face difficulties paying for various reasons, and we aim to provide a range of solutions.
"Anyone concerned about council tax or business rates arrears should call 01730 234400 to discuss ways to settle their arrears and avoid unnecessary legal action."
