WITH the summer holidays well and truly under way, Winchester Science Centre and Planetarium is making all the right noises with its Summer of Sound activities programme.
Running daily until September 4, from 10am to 5pm, the science centre will be exploring all things sound; amazing visitors with the power and secrets of audio and creating marvels with soundwave visualisations.
The centre has even transformed its outside space into a specially designed festival lawn. Complete with colourful flags and exhibition tents, open-air activities are available daily between 11am and 4.30pm.
A truly explosive experience is in store for visitors who watch Hot Sounds, as Dr Ben Littlefield and his education team demonstrates sound through the use of heat and fire.
Outside, the presenter-led workshop The Science of Sound provides an interactive journey into what sound actually is, with demonstrations and plenty of audience participation.
On the other side of the lawn, the University of Southampton has loaned the science centre a giant singing dragon bowl to demonstrate the secrets of the ancient Chinese and their mastery of sound through dancing water droplets.
In the event of bad weather, activities will be moved indoors alongside the science centre’s buskers, who will be showing off the more advanced and unusual applications of sound such as levitating objects using ultrasound and showcasing current cutting-edge research from the University of Southampton.
Visitors can also pay a visit to the UK’s largest standalone planetarium with a variety of shows available each week, including Dinosaurs at Dusk – the story of a teenage girl and her father who explore the past to discover the evolution of dinosaurs.
For younger visitors, the live show Twinkle Twinkle provides the chance to go stargazing without staying up past bedtime.
