A Met Office Red Extreme Heat Warning has forced businesses, schools and sports clubs across Whitehill and Bordon to change plans and cancel activities.
The warning, in force from yesterday (June 24) until Friday, June 26, is the highest level issued by the Met Office.
Forecasters say temperatures could exceed 37C, with some areas potentially reaching 40C, while high humidity and unusually warm nights are expected to make conditions even more challenging.
Businesses across the town have already begun adapting to the heat.
Café 1759 has temporarily closed to protect staff, volunteers and customers, while Simply African on Woolmer Way has introduced earlier opening hours, with staff starting at 6am and the shop closing at 2pm each day this week.
Café manager Lottie Levin said: “It is very hot and as we do not have air condition so we have decided to close unfortunately, for the safety of our staff and customers. We will be reviewing this on Thursday but it is really disappointing as we don’t want to let the community down as a community cafe.”
Schools and community groups have also taken precautions.
Oakmoor School has been providing free fruit to help pupils stay hydrated during break times, while Whitehill and Bordon FC and youth teams from Headley, Whitehill and Bordon Cricket Club have cancelled sessions because of concerns about the impact of the heat on children’s health.
The Met Office is urging residents to drink plenty of fluids, avoid direct sunlight during the hottest part of the day between 11am and 3pm, and keep curtains closed in sun-facing rooms where possible.
People are also being advised to check on elderly neighbours, relatives and other vulnerable residents during the heatwave. Anyone visiting open water should enter gradually and avoid jumping or diving in because of the risks associated with sudden changes in temperature.
