TRIBUTES have been paid to long-serving Frensham Dockenfield and Tilford councillor Brian Adams, who has died this week aged 78.

As a mark of respect, the flag at Waverley Borough Council’s The Burys headquarters in Godalming is currently flying at half-mast.

Mr Adams was born in Twickenham and educated at Wellington College, Crowthorne.

He lived for many years in Tilford with his wife Anita. They have a son living in Thursley, a daughter and four grandchildren.

His career developed through Watneys, Ready Mix Concrete and P&O.  For the last 20 years he had run an IT management consultancy.

As well as being involved in the local community, Brian was also a member of the Honourable Artillery Company, Royal Yachting Association and National Trust.

He was first elected to Waverley Borough Council in May 2011, and won two further elections in 2015 and 2019.

He served as a member of the council’s decision-making executive for many years, as well as serving on several committees including planning and overview & scrutiny. He was also a member of the Surrey County Council Local Committee.

Last October, Cllr Adams completed a six-month suspension from the Conservative Party after using a “wholly inappropriate” metaphor at a meeting of Tilford Parish Council.

Paying tribute, Cllr John Robini, the Mayor of Waverley, said: “Since being elected as ward councillor for Frensham Dockenfield and Tilford in 2011, Cllr Adams has worked tirelessly on behalf of residents.

“He has made a huge contribution to the borough, having spent time on the former executive committee as portfolio holder for planning and more recently as a respected member of the overview and scrutiny committee, western planning committee and Surrey County Council Local Committee.

“Cllr Adams was also deeply committed to public service outside of the council.

“All our thoughts go out to his family and friends at this terribly sad time.”
