Bordon Garrison Pre-school & Creche is set to close on July 22 this year after its lease was not renewed, the nursery has confirmed.
Whitehill & Bordon Regeneration Company (WBRC), which leases the building from the Defence Infrastructure Organisation, told the nursery the premises — in use since 1990 — are now considered dilapidated and unsuitable for childcare.
Despite efforts by the nursery and Hampshire County Council, no alternative accommodation has been offered.
In a letter to parents, the nursery said it would continue operating as normal until closure, provided staffing levels can be maintained. It acknowledged the disruption the decision will cause and encouraged families to begin exploring alternative childcare arrangements.
Andy Tree, leader of Whitehill Town Council, said he was pushing for a replacement facility.
“Parents and children need to know what is happening with their nursery places, and employees understandably need clarity about their jobs,” he said.
Tree said the site has been earmarked for housing for more than a decade and that while a new primary school is planned, preschool provision must also be addressed urgently.
A petition launched by parent Joanne Huckle highlights the nursery’s importance to the community.
“For more than 30 years, Bordon Garrison Pre-school has provided a dedicated and welcoming environment for families,” she said. “Closing it risks a childcare shortage and higher costs for local parents.”
The petition calls on WBRC to reconsider the decision and identify an alternative location.
Cllr Tree said he has contacted Hampshire County Council Children’s Services, written to the local MP and asked for the issue to be discussed at a future town council meeting, although the council has no decision-making powers over the matter.
As the closure date approaches, families, staff and the wider Bordon community are awaiting clarity on future childcare provision in the area.
