Video footage showing two ponies being towed behind a pickup truck through Kingsley has caused widespread concern among residents and prompted police and RSPCA involvement.
The incident was filmed on a dashcam and shared on social media last week.
The footage, recorded from a following vehicle, appears to show two ponies attached to the rear of a small pickup truck as it travelled along the B3004.
In the video, the ponies are seen repeatedly stumbling and falling as the vehicle continues along the road. After turning a corner, one of the animals appears to limp following one of several falls.
The pickup truck was travelling eastbound towards Kingsley before it turned south onto Oakhanger Road.
The footage has caused distress among residents in the surrounding towns and villages, with many describing the scenes as incredibly upsetting and calling for action from authorities.
A spokesperson for Hampshire Police confirmed that the force had received reports from a member of the public.
He said: “We received reports from a member of the public concerned for the wellbeing of two ponies being transported behind a vehicle across Green Street, Kingsley, on Monday, December 8, at around 3.40pm.
“We have referred this matter to the RSPCA.”
The RSPCA said it was unable to comment on specific cases.
An RSPCA spokesperson said: “Unfortunately, for legal reasons, we are unable to discuss specific complaints and what action may have been taken. We know this is frustrating but we must comply with the law.
“However, we would like to reassure people that we will always investigate any complaints made to us about animal welfare and we’re extremely grateful when people report concerns to us.”
No arrests have been reported in connection with the incident.
