IT is aimed at bringing together the community, but a lack of visitors to Headley village fete on Saturday meant this could be the last time the event, held every other year, takes place.

As always, organiser Rosemary Schofield and her committee had laid on a feast of entertainment and fun, starting with a colourful procession around the village green, led by Fete Prince Ruben and Fete Princess Darcey, both pupils at Headley’s The Holme Primary School.

They were followed by children from Little Badgers Pre-School and the Arford Women’s Institute, all dressed as characters from Beatrix Potter tales.

The traditional dog show was held in the arena and there was a Falconhigh birds-of-prey display.

Air Training Corps cadets impressed with their drill sequences, while parents and children loved the ASH Puppets show and everyone was invited to join in the hula-hoop and egg-catching competition.

There was a display of vintage vehicles, a flight simulator from the Air Cadets and bushcraft techniques from the Scouts.

A petting farm visited, and in the village hall the Ludshott Photographic Society held a display of its pictures as well as paintings by Christopher Cole’s art group.

There were cakes made by the Women’s Institute, the beer tent was popular and The Dog Ends band played.

For those who did attend it was a fun day, but Mrs Scofield said: “We, the fete committee, were disappointed at the low-attendance numbers. It was a bit cold, but it didn’t rain and there were plenty of entertainments to please the whole family, from ages nine months to 90.

“The whole reason for the fete is to provide a fun day out for the community of Headley and surrounding areas, and to give local organisations the opportunity to promote themselves and to do some fundraising.

“There were plenty of local organisations represented, but where was the rest of the community?

“If the people of Headley do not want one (a fete) there is no point in us carrying on. We are a very small committee, and if the fete is to continue it needs new members now, preferably younger people with families who can take it forward.

“We will still be putting on the Christmas concert on December 10, so l hope that will be well supported.

“I would like to thank all those who supplied equipment and help and those who donated raffle prizes.

“I do not know if we will do another fete in 2018.

“Thanks to all those who did come and those who participated, and to all of the committee members who worked so hard over the year to put the fete on.”
