Dementia-friendly Alton enjoys huge support from local members and residents, who are keen to see the service provided continue to thrive.

During summer each year, the regular Forget-me-not Sponsored Walk, usually around the Public Gardens, provides an accessible opportunity for supporters who feel unable to take on the challenge of a national sponsored walk to do their bit to raise funds and awareness for Dementia-friendly Alton.

The additional advantage of undertaking the walk locally is that supporters get to enjoy the Butterfly Walk around the Public Gardens, which has been created by the horticultural group within Dementia-friendly Alton with support from Alton Town Council.

Also during the month of August each year, the annual Forget-me-not Church Service led by Revd Wendy Burnhams provides a relaxed and informal church service that is accessible for people living with dementia and their carers at All Saints Church.

With nearly 50 members participating this year, the service remains an important date in the church calendar, especially as it is followed by afternoon tea and a cheerful sing-along in the church hall.

A tombola and raffle organised by Kate Dando and family, long-term fundraisers for dementia support in Alton, provides yet another opportunity for local members to showcase their support.

With nearly £800 being raised for Dementia-friendly Alton as a result of both of these events, it is clear that regular members are keen to support the development of the service.

Dementia-friendly Alton co-ordinator Karen Murrell said: “We’re grateful to our members and supporters who step up every year to raise awareness and champion our cause.

"The engagement and positive feedback experienced in these annual events is all the encouragement we need to keep the service moving forward."
