THERE will be more overnight closures of the A3

Hindhead Tunnel this weekend.

The tunnel will be closed in both directions for systems maintenance work between 10pm and 6am on Friday and Saturday.

Four nights of overnight closures in both directions

have already taken place and further work is

planned for February 27, February 28 and March 1.

Work will take place between 10pm and 6am on

Thursdays and Fridays, and between 9pm and 9am on

Saturdays.

Diversions will be in place via the A31 and A325.

The work will also ensure electricity supplies in the

event of a power spike, say the Highways Agency.

Routine maintenance of the tunnel – when one of the

two bores will be shut for four days at time – has also

been planned for March, April, June, July, August,

October and November.

Traffic will use the opposite bore in a contraflow

with a 40mph speed limit.

An agency spokesman said routine maintenance

involves tasks such as jet washing and testing equipment.
