With Christmas just around the corner, the long days of summer feel like a distant memory. Alton kick-started the festive season with a Christmas lights switch-on in November, filling the town with happy faces enjoying the new lights that now illuminate our town.

This year, the town hall has seen a few changes. Most notably, we welcomed a new town clerk and some fresh faces around the council chamber table. Over the summer, the exterior of the town hall underwent refurbishment, giving it a fresh new look just in time to shine as the Christmas lights went up in the Market Square.

As our community comes together once again to celebrate this special time of year, I have had the privilege, as town mayor, to attend a wide variety of events that have brought people from near and far to Alton.

One standout moment was the unveiling of Jane Austen’s sculpture in June, which saw television crews and visitors from across the globe gather to honour her legacy. It was a real honour to be part of such a historic occasion.

Alton’s strength lies in its community. I am continually grateful for the dedication and time given by our volunteers and town hall staff, who work tirelessly to create, run and support the many events we have enjoyed throughout the year.

As I chat with residents at these gatherings, the joy is unmistakable – laughter, smiles and a shared sense of celebration that reminds me how much Alton loves to come together and make the most of every moment.

As town mayor and councillor, I know I will continue to witness the wonderful energy Alton shares, whether I am out with the Alton Lions, walking alongside Santa and his reindeer, or taking part in the St Michael’s Hospice Reindeer Run. Standing at the Christmas tree festival at St Lawrence Church, gazing at the beautiful display of 86 Christmas trees created by different organisations and groups,

I was again reminded of how the Alton community comes together and shares so much kindness and joy with those around us. These moments reflect the important roles we all play in our town’s story.

I hope the new year brings you and your families many opportunities, and that, as a community, we can share many more memories together. Wishing you all the best for 2026.

Cllr Annette Eyre, Town Mayor of Alton
