Aldershot & Farnham Hockey Club’s ladies’ first team earned their first win of the season with a 2-0 victory at Burnt Ash Ladies’ first team.

The Shots faced an early start as they set off to the University of Greenwich to face a new team for the league.

Both teams started the game at a fast pace. Sophie Edwards won an early long corner, but Burnt Ash broke to the other end and won a penalty corner at the second attempt. Shots keeper Lucy Cochrane confidently saved the attempt.

Tammy Cherry took the opposition on at pace, and the Shots attacks began to build.

Sydney Field’s shot was saved by the Burnt Ash keeper and the ball hovered on the goal line, but no Shots players were close enough to tap it in.

The visitors piled on the pressure again and won a penalty corner. The first penalty corner hit a foot, and the second corner was deflected by Cherry just over the bar.

The Shots had numerous other attacks, but went into the half-time break at 0-0.

A rousing team talk from coach Matt Aldrich had the visitors on the attack again in the second half.

The Shots had the patience to stick to their processes, and a couple of goal line scrambles almost led to a breakthrough.

Burnt Ash then conceded a penalty stroke and Phoebe Bryant slotted it away to give the Shots the lead.

The visitors continued to impress, with the defence connecting to the midfield and the forwards making endless runs.

The Shots had several near misses from short corners as they pushed for a second.

Cherry scored the second when she went on an excellent run and calmly slotted the ball into the back of the net.

The Shots lost Bryant to a green card, but held on for their first win of the season.
