CHAWTON Park ladies suffered a double disappointment in national indoor bowls area finals last week against the same opposition, Dolphin IBC.

In the 0/50s two-wood triples, Beryl Collier, Margaret Holden and Margaret Leppard stretched a Penny Cresswell triple that included indoor and outdoor international Julie Leake. Chawton were still in contention going into the last end, but finally lost 16-14.

Sue Murray joined up with the Chawton trio to play the national fours against Dolphin, again led by Penny Cresswell, at the unique venue at New Milton,

Another close match ensued, with the Dolphin four coming through to win by a somewhat flattering 24 shots to 16.

Chawton enjoyed better fortune in the men’s Hampshire County competitions. There was a comfortable fours victory for Basa Smith, Gordon Summerhill, Mark Fyfield and Adam White against Andrew Moore’s Riverside rink, 28 shots to 12.

John Driver and David Sims travelled to Loddon Vale in the pairs and came away with a 19-12 victory.

However, there was no for joy for Ron and Greg Roberts and skip Graham Robinson in the 0/60s two-wood triples, Chawton losing to Steve Whitehead’s men at Banister Park.

David Sims skipped Norma Craighill, Lesley Johnson and Dave Turner to an impressive win in the mixed fours against Fred Norris’s rink from Loddon Vale. Chawton set up the win with a seven on the first end and they led 12-0 after four ends before the Norris rink fought back to get within four shots.

But with the Sims four all contributing, the lead was stretched to 10 shots and Loddon Vale conceded with one end to go.

Chawton won two home friendly matches last week. The North Hants Women’s BA made their annual visit and proved to be strong opponents, Chawton finally winning by an overall score of 105-95.

Sunday saw some local rivalry, the visitors being Alton BC who had more than a sprinkling of Chawton members amongst their numbers. Chawton emerged with a five-shot victory.
