CHAWTON Park Indoor Bowling Club opened their indoor season with three notable wins in national competitions.

In the men’s Over-60s Doubles, Chawton came up against Dolphin IBC, often a stumbling block in previous seasons.

It was a good start for Chawton, with Graham Robinson’s home rink and Dave Atwell’s away rink both holding their own. It then looked like history would repeat itself as Robinson’s rink, having held an eight-shot advantage, only rescued a draw on the last end.

However, down at Poole, the tide was turning as the Atwell rink picked up nine shots over the last three ends securing a five-shot win for Chawton.

Chawton’s men were also in action in the Denny Cup, with two rinks at home and two at Worthing,

Chawton led from the start. Adam White’s rink were particularly dominant, eventually winning 37-8. Mark Fyfield’s rink lost by one on the final end.

Away from home, Graham Robinson’s rink won 16-13 after picking up six shots on the last three ends, while Dave Atwell’s men fought back from a 10-shot deficit at midway and lost by six. Overall, Chawton won 87-62 and will now meet Isle of Wight.

The Chawton ladies began their Yetton Trophy campaign against Palmerston and were in fine form. The home rinks, skipped by Brenda Plumpton and Beryl Collier, were on the rampage from the first end and were never seriously challenged, winning 25-7 and 27-9.

It was a different tale for the away rinks, led by Margaret Leppard and Margaret Holden. But they both fought back from large deficits to lose by only six shots each and Chawton recorded a comfortable 81-64 victory overall. Chawton will play Riverside IBC in the next round.

Chawton Park are still looking for their first win in friendly fixtures, having so far met very strong opponents in the Northamptonshire President touring side, Hampshire Patrons and West Berks.
